Gelfand, one of the most renowned mathematicians of the 20th century, introduces young students to the power and beauty of coordinate geometry. Originally developed as part of Gelfands seminar series for gifted high school students in the 1960s, the book exemplifies his passion for clarity, curiosity, and intellectual engagement.Through simple and elegant language, Gelfand transforms geometric intuition into algebraic expressions, teaching readers how to represent shapes and figures with numbers and symbols. This method forms a crucial foundation for understanding calculus and modern mathematical analysis.Written for upper elementary and secondary studentsand their teachersit remains fresh and inspiring decades after its first appearance. Gelfands approach continues to help young mathematicians see the harmony between visual geometry and symbolic reasoning.ttekintsGelfand Izrael M.(19132009) a huszadik szzad egyik legnagyobb matematikusa, aki az 1960-as vekben szeminriumsorozatot indtott tehetsges kzpiskolsok szmra. Gelfand (19132009)was a legendary Soviet mathematician, awarded theWolf Prizefor his contributions to functional analysis, representation theory, and mathematical education. His Moscow seminars trained generations of top mathematiciansincluding future Fields Medalistsand were renowned for blending intuition, rigor, and creativity. This book distills Gelfands teaching philosophy: mathematics should not merely be learned, butdiscovered, with joy and intellectual curiosity.TheMethod of Coordinatesseries inspired similar educational projects across Europe and the U.S., including collaborations at Harvard and Rutgers Universities after Gelfands emigration.rdekessgekIzrael M.
