Written during Debussy’s mature Impressionist period, the work is characterized by itsrapid changes in mood and texture, suggesting the chaotic energy and sudden emotional shifts of a Venetian carnival or a theatrical masquerade. The music features relentless, motoric rhythmic figures, brilliant scale passages, and a driving energy reminiscent of aTarantella, often cycling through moments of frantic activity and sudden, dark introspection. This edition, published by Editio Musica Budapest (EMB) and edited by the distinguished Hungarian Debussy specialistSolymos Pter, provides a clear, high-quality score for advanced pianists tackling this exhilarating and challenging work.ttekintsClaude DebussyMasques(Maszkok) cm, 1904-ben komponlt mve egy rendkvl drmai s ritmikailag feszlt virtuz darab szl zongorra. However, they were eventually published as separate stand-alone pieces. The work is known for its technical difficulties, requiring extreme agility and precision to execute the rapidarpeggiosandalternating chordsthat create the sense of manic energy. Critics often connect the pieces dramatic and often manic emotional shifts to the influence of theCommedia dell’arteand its masked characters (like Pierrot or Harlequin). The piece highlights Debussy’s ability to create a vivid narrative and psychological depth through purely musical means.rdekessgekAMasques-ot aL’isle joyeuse(A vidm sziget) cm mvel egy idben komponlta Debussy, s eredetileg egy nagyobb szvit rszeknt sznta ket kzs eladsra, valsznleg aD’un cahier d’esquissesmellett.
