Hanne, the soprano soloist, tells a humorous tale to the villagers during a winter evening of spinning and work. The story describes a country girl who is approached by a lecherous nobleman; she cleverly distracts him and steals his horse to escape, leaving the villagers (the chorus) to laugh at his misfortune. The “Laughing” Chorus:In Hungary, this piece is often affectionately referred to as theNevet krus(Laughing Chorus) because of the choir’s reaction to the nobleman’s embarrassment at the end of Hanne’s story.Haydn’s Reluctance:Haydn composedThe Seasonsreluctantly, often complaining that the libretto by Baron van Swieten was “French trash” compared to the sacred majesty of his previous hit,The Creation. Despite his grumbling,The Seasonsand particularly charming, folk-like numbers like this onebecame a massive success.Cultural Bridge:This 1959 edition represents a period where Western classical masterpieces were being actively curated and translated for Hungarian choirs, highlighting the rich choral tradition of the region.PublishersEditio Musica Budapest ZenemkiadWe value your feedback!
