After retiring from opera at the height of his fame, Rossini composed this profound setting of the 13th-century hymn to the Virgin Mary. This Ricordi edition provides the complete vocal score with a sophisticated piano reduction, making it an essential resource for soloists, choir directors, and piano accompanists. It captures the dramatic intensity, soaring melodies, and spiritual depth that have made this work a staple of the Romantic repertoire.Product FeaturesFormat:Paperback / Sheet MusicPeriod:RomanticLength:110 pagesDimensions:Standard Concert SizeWeight:0.37 kgEdition:Complete Score for Canto e PianoforteTypography:Clear, high-quality engraving typical of Ricordi editions.Interesting FactsA Long Journey:Rossini began the work in 1831 but did not complete it until 1841. The first half was originally written by his friend Giovanni Tadolini because Rossini was in poor health, but Rossini eventually replaced those movements with his own compositions for the definitive 1842 premiere. The “Cujus Animam”:This work contains the famous tenor aria “Cujus animam gementem,” known for its challenging high D-flat and its surprisingly upbeat, heroic melody despite the somber subject matter.Triumphant Success:The premiere in Paris was a sensation, followed by an equally successful Italian premiere directed by none other than Gaetano Donizetti.Sacred vs. Secular:While some 19th-century critics felt the music was “too operatic” for a church setting, it is now celebrated for its emotional honesty and melodic genius.PublishersPublisher:RicordiItem Number:CP04918200We value your feedback!
