These ballads, often comical, political, scandalous, or even obscene, served as the pop songs of their time, acting as a form of tabloid press. They cover a variety of subjects from the Great Fire of London to tales of infidelity and royal gossip, providing a genuine insight into the lives of ordinary folk during the period. The collection features lyrics that have been ‘re-connected’ to their original tunes for the first time, making them accessible and enjoyable for singers of all abilities. Each song is accompanied by explanatory notes that provide historical context and a glossary for obscure or obsolete words and phrases, enriching the reader’s understanding of the music and its background.Illustrated throughout with original woodcuts, this anthology is not only a fascinating historical record but also a rewarding collection of some of the most delightful tunes England has ever produced.Additionally, Naxos’ CD release”Penny Merriments”(Naxos 8.557672) includes 18 of the songs featured in this book.Hungarian Translation – Overview (ttekints)A “Broadside Ballads”Lucie Skeaping ltal szerkesztett tfog gyjtemnye tbb mint hetven dalnak, amelyek megrktik a 17. szzadi Anglia lnyegt.
