Subtitled “Piccole scene sopra 4 note” (Little Scenes on Four Notes), this masterpiece is one of the most imaginative works in the piano literature. The cycle consists of 21 short pieces representing masked revelers at a festival, including commedia dell’arte characters, real-life friends of Schumann, and the composers own musical alter-egos, Florestan and Eusebius. This Ricordi edition is highly valued by conservatory students and concert pianists for its clear typography and commitment to the original Romantic spirit, providing an excellent framework for mastering the works rhythmic complexities and emotional depth.Product FeaturesFormat:Softcover Sheet MusicWeight:0.117 kgContent:Complete cycle of 21 character pieces.Publisher:Casa Ricordi (Milan)Difficulty:Advanced / Artist Level.Musical Focus:Characterization, technical agility, and programmatic storytelling.Interesting FactsThe “four notes” mentioned in the subtitle refer to a musical cryptogram. Schumann used the notesA, Eb, C, and B (in German: A-S-C-H). This was the name of the town where his then-fiance, Ernestine von Fricken, lived, and the letters are also found in his own name. Throughout the cycle, these four notes appear in various permutations (the “Sphinxes”), acting as the hidden structural DNA of the entire work. Interestingly, the finale of the piece features the “March of the League of David against the Philistines,” representing Schumanns artistic battle against the conservative, non-artistic musical establishment of his time.PublishersCasa Ricordi (Milan)A global leader in music publishing since 1808.
