The termKeservestranslates to “lament” or “plaintive song” and refers to a specific, emotionally charged genre of traditional Hungarian folk music.Published by Editio Musica Budapest in 1979, this piece is characterized by itsmodal harmony, rhythmic flexibility (parlando-rubato), and profound emotional depth. Bartks setting for three-part female voices enhances the inherent melancholy of the folk melody, making it a compelling piece of repertoire for intermediate to advanced women’s choirs (Grade 3). The work is an outstanding example of Bartk’s masterful transformation of authentic Hungarian peasant music into concise, powerful concert art. The score is presented entirely inHungarian.ttekintsAKeserves (Lament)egy mlyen megrendt s rendkvl kifejez, rvid a cappella mNi karra (SMA),Bartk Bla (18811945)tollbl. It is characterized by its non-strict tempo (parlando-rubato), wide melodic range, and typically sad, existential lyrics, making it highly challenging to perform authentically.Choral Minimalism:In just two pages, Bartk captures the emotional core of the folk lament, using minimal forces (only three parts) to create a profound harmonic effect.Thematic Integrity:Bartks a cappella settings of folk texts, composed mainly in the 1930s, are considered the purest expression of his ethnomusicological and compositional fusion, designed to bring the raw power of peasant music into the concert hall.Educational Value:Despite its brevity, this work is often used in choral studies to teach sophisticated phrasing, dynamic control, and the interpretation of non-metrical rhythmic structures.rdekessgekA Keserves Mfaj:AKeservesa magyar npzene egyik legrgebbi s legkomolyabb mfaja.
