Composed in 1996, this 9-minute work features powerful baritone lines set against an orchestral backdrop that alternates between eerie tranquility and bursts of frenetic activity. In this piece, the chorus serves as spiritssometimes benign, sometimes menacinginvoking Caliban’s name and adding layers of complexity to the soundscape. Benjamin’s meticulous craftsmanship and refined aural sensibility create an environment filled with shifting meters, cross-currents of orchestral texture, and a blend of calling and humming voices. The music captures Caliban’s emotional journey, from sensuous delight and bewilderment to a brilliantly orchestrated climax of inchoate terror.Critically acclaimed, the piece has been described as “an atmospheric and subtly orchestrated work” that captures attention from the very first sounds of xylophone and mandolin, leading to powerful baritone phrases and ethereal choral spirits, culminating in a perfectly-paced crescendo before fading into a trance-like conclusion.Hungarian Translation – Overview (ttekints)George Benjamin: Sometime Voices (Kotta)egy figyelemre mlt kompozci, amely baritonra, krusra s zenekarra kszlt, s Caliban hres beszdn alapul ShakespeareA viharcm mvnek III. felvons 2. jelenetben.
