Spanning 24 pages and lasting approximately nine minutes, this work challenges the traditional perception of the viola, transforming it from an inner-voice instrument into a powerful and commanding lead. The piece is constructed as a continuous dialogue, where both performers engage in an intricate musical conversation. Benjamin crafts richly textured polyphony, with the music often branching into four or more simultaneous voices, producing a depth and complexity that mimics a much larger ensemble. The result is a vibrant, orchestral sound world born from just two instruments.Premiered in 1997, Viola, Viola has since become a cornerstone of contemporary viola repertoire, admired for its virtuosity, inventiveness, and emotional intensity. It is particularly noted for unleashing the explosive energy and technical prowess that the viola can offer, demanding precision, control, and deep musical sensitivity from both players. This is an essential piece for any advanced violist seeking to expand their repertoire with a duo work that is both technically challenging and musically compelling.Hungarian Translation – Overview (ttekints)Viola, Viola George Benjamin mve egy forradalmi s kifejez kompozci kt brcsra, amely mlyrehatan trja fel a hangszer zenei lehetsgeit.
