The openingHaydnselection, based on the tune later known asGott erhalte Franz den Kaiser, provides a crucial study inclassical theme and variations form. The highlight of the Slavic section isAnatoly LyadovsRussian Song, which is notable because it was conceivedoriginallyfor four cellos, making it an authentic, untouched piece of cello ensemble literature.Dvok’s Walzeris included as a test of the ensemble’s technical cohesion, requiring precision and expressive flexibility.Goltermann’s Serenadeoffers a beautiful, idiomatic finish, capitalizing on the lush, resonant sound of thecello choir. This volume is highly valued for its contribution of authentic and expertly arrangedRussian and Czech musicto the pedagogical repertoire.rdekes
