Written on the eve of World War I, the Duo is a monumental conversation between the two string instruments, pushing their technical and expressive boundaries to the limit. Kodly masterfully weaves the “parlando-rubato” style of Hungarian folk song into a sophisticated three-movement structure. The violin and cello are treated as equal partners, often imitating the sounds of a much larger ensemble through the use of wide-ranging registers and rich textures. ThisUniversal Editionscore is the definitive performance edition for professional chamber musicians and advanced conservatory students.Product FeaturesFormat:Sheet Music (Set of two performance scores)Period:20th CenturyDifficulty:Virtuoso / Advanced (Grade 8+)Length:24 pagesWeight:0.205 kgPublisher:Universal EditionStructure:Three Movements (Allegro serioso, non troppo; Adagio; Maestoso e largamente, ma non troppo – Presto)Interesting FactsThe “Invisible” Orchestra:Despite having only two players, Kodly uses double-stops and varied bow techniques to create a massive, orchestral soundscape.Folk Research:The year this was written (1914), Kodly and Bartk were deep in their ethnomusicological travels; the rhythms and scales of the Duo directly reflect the authentic Transylvanian music they were documenting.A Wartime Masterpiece:The work was composed during the final months of peace before WWI, which may account for the intense, brooding energy found in theAdagiomovement. The “Hungarian Bach”:Critics have often compared the structural perfection of this Duo to the counterpoint of J.S. Bach, but infused with a fiery Hungarian soul.PublishersUniversal Edition (Vienna)We value your feedback! Share your experience with this product to help others make informed decisions.
