Composed in 1915, this collection consists of 20 melodies based on traditional “Colinde”carols that Bartk personally collected during his ethnomusicological expeditions. Unlike the polished carols of Western Europe, these pieces maintain their rugged folk character, asymmetric rhythms, and modal harmonies. This Universal Edition publication is an essential addition to the library of any pianist looking to explore the intersection of 20th-century modernism and authentic folk heritage.Product FeaturesFormat:Sheet Music (Softcover)Instrumentation:Solo PianoLength:18 pagesWeight:0.11 kgSeries:Bartk Archive EditionPublisher:Universal EditionMusical Structure:Two series of 10 carols eachInteresting FactsThe Origins:Bartk collected these melodies between 1909 and 1913 in Transylvania. He was fascinated by the “Colinde” tradition, which often blended Christian themes with older, pre-Christian winter solstice rituals.Pedagogical Value:These pieces are frequently used by piano teachers to introduce students to non-traditional rhythms and modern harmonies without the technical intimidation of Bartk’s larger works.Authenticity:Bartk purposely avoided “standardizing” the melodies. He kept the strange, shifting time signatures that characterized the original village singing styles.Universal Edition:This publisher was Bartk’s primary partner for many years, ensuring that this edition remains one of the most authoritative versions available to performers today.Track Listing (Musical Content)First Series:Carols 1 through 10 (Short, evocative character pieces)Second Series:Carols 11 through 20 (Varying in mood from festive to deeply melancholic)PublishersUniversal Edition (Vienna)We value your feedback!
