His treatise,Il Transilvano(The Transylvanian), first published in 1593, is a landmark work written in the form of a dialogue with a Transylvanian musician named Istvn (Stephen). It is arguably thefirst treatise dedicated entirely to keyboard technique, establishing concepts that influenced performance for centuries. The treatise is especially notable for making a clear distinction between the fingering appropriate for theorgan(with its legato style) and theharpsichordor other lighter keyboard instruments. It contains music by prominent composers like Claudio Merulo and Andrea Gabrieli. This1981 EMB edition, meticulously edited byPernye Andrs, Zszkaliczky Tams, and Barlay .
