Known for its rhythmic vitality, expressive intensity, and technical demands, the work exemplifies Jolivets distinctive compositional style, which blends primitivism, mysticism, and modernism.Written in a single continuous movement but with clearly delineated contrasting sections, the Concertino explores a wide emotional and dynamic range from introspective lyricism to explosive virtuosity. Jolivet uses the trumpet not only as a brilliant solo instrument but also as a vehicle for deep musical expression, breaking away from traditional fanfare-like writing. The dialogue between the trumpet and piano is intricate and dynamic, with the piano serving as a true partner, rather than mere accompaniment. The harmonic language is colorful and unpredictable, drawing from modal scales and atonality, while the rhythmic structures reflect Jolivets interest in non-Western music and ancient rituals.Often performed in recitals, auditions, and competitions, the Concertino is considered a benchmark work for advanced trumpet players. Its combination of technical brilliance and emotional depth continues to captivate audiences and challenge performers, securing its place as one of the most important trumpet works of the 20th century.French Translation – OverviewLe “Concertino” pour trompette et piano dAndr Jolivet, compos en 1948, est lune des uvres majeures du rpertoire contemporain pour trompette.
