His transcription is the source of all modern editions, making his work crucial to the piece’s preservation. The Mystery of Elise:The identity of the dedicatee remains one of the great romantic mysteries in music history. The most plausible theory suggests that Nohl misread Beethoven’s hurried handwriting and the original inscription was likely”Fr Therese”(Therese Malfatti, a student and object of Beethoven’s affection).Enduring Popularity:Despite its simple structure (Rondo form: ABACA),Fr Eliseretains immense worldwide appeal.
