Composed between October 1988 and March 1989, it was commissioned by the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and has become a significant work in modern orchestral repertoire.Structured as a 13-minute scherzo, the piece features evolving and interlocking variations within a consistent 6/4 time signature and brisk tempo. Matthews uses this stable rhythmic framework to build shifting textures and subtle transformations. The title, Hidden Variables, refers to underlying complexities and contrasts in the music. Matthews juxtaposes contrasting sonorities, tonalities, and stylistic elements, creating tension and unpredictability.Despite being variation-based, the music avoids clear-cut divisions. It flows continuously, with no obvious repetition, maintaining momentum and coherence. The orchestration balances soloistic detail with ensemble color, crafting a vivid sonic landscape. This work reflects Matthews deep engagement with contemporary music while providing an emotionally rich and intellectually stimulating experience. Hidden Variables is a testament to modern orchestral innovation and expression.Hungarian Translation – Overview (ttekints)Colin Matthews Rejtett vltozk cm mve egy lenygz kortrs zenekari darab, amely a zenei szerkezet, varicik s ritmikai sszefggsek sszetettsgt trja fel.
