Ralph Vaughan Williams: Nocturne & Scherzo (Score)Product InformationCatalog Number:0571519938ISMN:9780571519934 / 9780571519934Product Type:ScoreSetting:String QuintetLength:40 pagesPublisher:Faber MusicOverviewNocturne & Scherzo by Ralph Vaughan Williams is a pivotal composition in his early chamber music output, showcasing the development of his distinctive musical voice. The Nocturne is particularly noteworthy for its rich, mature sound, reflecting Vaughan Williams’ growth as a composer, influenced by his studies with Maurice Ravel in 1908. The piece is characterized by its lush chromatic harmonies and lyrical qualities, which would become hallmarks of Vaughan Williams’ later works, such as the slow movement in A London Symphony. The Scherzo that accompanies the Nocturne brings a contrast in character, offering a lively and spirited musical atmosphere. It introduces folk influences, weaving them seamlessly into the compositions texture. The folk tune appears in fragmented form throughout the piece until the penultimate page, where it is given a more complete and striking exposition, showcasing Vaughan Williams’ ability to integrate folk music into his classical style. The work itself is around 10 minutes in length. The earlier Scherzo from 1904, which is included in this collection, provides a more vigorous and energetic contrast. It features fugal episodes and is more compact, lasting approximately 6 minutes. This Scherzo can be performed independently, standing as a complete work on its own, with its lively and intense character adding another dimension to Vaughan Williams’ early chamber music repertoire. Both works highlight Vaughan Williams ability to blend lyricism with rhythmic vitality and offer insight into his evolution as a composer, laying the foundation for his later, more expansive orchestral and vocal works.Hungarian Translation – Overview (ttekints)Nocturne & Scherzo Ralph Vaughan Williams kompozcija a korai kamarazenje egyik mrfldkve, amely bemutatja sajtos zeneszerzi hangjnak fejldst.
