Inspired by the majestic landscape of the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York, the piece vividly captures the serene grandeur and sweeping vistas of this iconic American region. The Catskills are renowned for their unique combination of tranquillity and raw natural powerqualities that Hess translates into music through lush harmonies, gently undulating melodies, and a subtle yet compelling emotional arc. The music unfolds with a sense of spaciousness, as though echoing the rolling hills, dense forests, and quiet valleys that define the area. There is a pastoral calm in its opening, gradually growing into a more expansive and dramatic middle section, before returning to the stillness and peace of the mountains at dusk.As part of East Coast Pictures, The Catskills was commissioned by the British Youth Wind Orchestra, with funding provided by National Westminster Bank plc. The suite presents three musical snapshots of locations along the eastern seaboard of the United States, each movement evoking a distinct sense of place and atmosphere. The Catskills stands out for its lyrical depth and atmospheric subtlety, offering performers the chance to explore tone color, balance, and expressive phrasing. It is not only a celebration of natural beauty but also a poignant musical journey that speaks to the listener’s imagination and emotions.Hungarian Translation – Overview (ttekints)Nigel Hess The Catskills cm mve egy gazdagon kifejez s hangulatos kompozci, amelyet szimfonikus fvszenekarra rt, s a nagy siker East Coast Pictures szvit msodik tteleknt szerepel.
